Five squares is one of my favorite team-building activities! I first found this activity at the Challenger Learning Center in St. Louis. The activity was introduced to me as a way to help students with their nonverbal communication skills! Basically, the activity involves giving a group of students an envelope of pieces containing parts of a square. Five squares are "cut up" into puzzle pieces of sorts. Here is the fun part: as a team, they must finish their square puzzles, but they aren't allowed to talk! They can give other members of their team a piece they need, motion to it with their hands, give a look with their eyes...but NO TALKING is allowed! It is so fun to watch each group work through this activity! Here is a copy of the directions. Try it out! I'm sure you and your students will love it! And who doesn't need a good ten minutes of silence in their day? :)
