One solution I found this year was having my students write me weekly letters about their reading. Once a week, they turn in their Reader's Notebooks to my bin. Each student is assigned a day of the week to turn in their one page letter, so I only have to grade around five notebooks a night. (Confession: sometimes I grade them the next morning!) I write each student a letter back, asking them questions about their reading.
