This month, we wanted to make sure Lucy was ready to go for baby's arrival, so we took her to the groomer for a fresh new look. After that, however, she developed an allergic hot spot, had to take prednisone and antibiotics, and then got an upset tummy from all of the meds. Plus, she was having a hard time not licking the hot spot, so she had to get the cone of shame from the vet (which made both her and us very unhappy).
As excited as I am to meet our son in just a few days, I can't help feeling a little sad that our beloved dog Lucy (our first baby) will no longer be the "baby" of the house. I know it sounds strange, but I'm sure dog owners/lovers can relate and understand. Lucy has been our life for the past seven years and is truly the heart of our home. (Read how we found her here). Needless to say, it was the most time and money we've ever spent at the vet in the seven years we've had her. Then, to make matters worse, a few days ago she woke up with a swollen eye. Her eye was dripping discharge like pink eye, she was squinting it like it hurt, and her third eyelid was visible, indicating that she was in pain. I, of course, panicked and rushed her to the vet and met my husband there. The vet tested her for glaucoma and for any corneal abrasions, which thankfully came back all negative and normal. Lucy is getting older, and her eyesight and eyes are definitely bad, and the vet thinks that she might just be a candidate for eye drops for the long haul. Luckily, the next day she woke up feeling fine and her eye looked much better, so the drops appear to be working at least for now. We have no idea how old Lucy actually is since she was a stray, but we know she is getting much older even if she still plays and runs and acts like the pup we knew. We want to enjoy all of the time we have left with this little loving creature who we joke "found us" in the parking lot seven years ago. I can't imagine what the past seven years would have been like without her. She's been with us since I started teaching, through three house moves, and through so many difficult times. Dogs are truly the best because they just love you no matter what. Lucy doesn't care if I wasn't on my A game at work or if I just feel like laying on the couch all day avoiding responsibilities (actually, she prefers that last statement-ha!). We just feel so fortunate to have been found by the best dog ever, and I truly know no dog could ever live up to Lucy. I know she will be protective of the new little addition in the house, but I also know it will change how much attention she gets. My husband assures me that since he and Lucy already have such a special bond that he will make sure that for every snuggle the new little guy gets, he will make sure Lucy gets as well. I plan on taking a million pictures of our little boy with Lucy as well, since we can't be sure how long she will be around for him to remember her. Anyway, sorry this post is more of a long rant about how much I adore my dog, but I wanted to get these thoughts down before we go to the hospital. I love this dog more than I could ever imagine, and she will always be our first baby.
